So. Apparently moa hate ghostbore turrets.

Yes, I frequently do this. I try to break the game in new and interesting ways. But only in amusing ways, nothing exploitative, because that’s boring. So, this time, I wanted to know whether the Iron Legion ghostbore turrets would work on the other spawns in the instance.

Guess what? They do! But not only that, they actually draw the aggro of the things they’re shooting at. Here we entertainingly see an annoyed moa attacking a turret with a crane kick. Sadly, despite that moa’s elegant command of bird fu, it was the moa that ended up becoming bird fu’d.

So there you go.

This is my charr ranger, whom I think ended up looking quite cute, almost Disney, and kind of un-charr-like in the general scheme of things. I was pleased with the outcome.

Due to limited time, other than interests which matter to me that I want to bring to my audience, I might start doing this. What this means is that I won’t post bomb you so much, because according to my own research, I find people prefer digest posts rather than post bombing.

Essentially, something that collects together all of the most interesting tidbits of the last while. So that’s what I’m going to do. Again, my time has become limited, so I might miss out on things. As such, I must ask a thing - please either tag your posts as charr or note me about them if you want to see them appear here.

A charr lady sporting the ever-spiky charr racial armour! I’m fond of this because of all the spikes, but also because it has my favourite charr lady horns - the ones that look like Star Trek starship warp nacelles. Now I’ve pointed this out, you will never be able to unsee!

I love this sketch. It gets the lower horn being between the ears right, this is something that a lot of charr artists miss out on, because horn and ear placement is part of the charr race’s sexual dimorphism.

All in all, it’s just a great sketch, anyway. A nice start on the charr to be sure. I hope to see more from you, lumerixtea!

Roar indeed! Apparently Himnesia has been encouraging rashkah to do more charr art. I would do the same. We don’t want less charr art, we want moa. Then again, I probably shouldn’t use that pun… it might result in a torrent of moa art. Or worse, charr and moa. This could have a worrying turn.

It might even result in the introduction of an even larger type of bird to Charming, which could cause a rip in the fabric of the space-time continuum, causing it to unravel like a cheap piece of cloth!

Yeeeah. Kind of didn’t know where I was going with that.

This isn’t bad at all. Though this charr does have one too many sets of horns. Four ears in total, four horns in total, that’s how the charr roll for head ornamentation. Though they can have spikes, but those spikes are never as big as the horns.

Still, that’s only a minor criticism marring what’s otherwise a really nice piece. A slightly eerie one maybe as I wonder if with that expression he’s planning on doing unspeakable things to the viewer, but good. I hope to see more from you, ysdaar!!

Cunningfox is a name I’ve come to associate with really damned good charr art. It’s a name I look forward to seeing. Why? Well, it’s great, innit? A charr battling a centaur, and bloody masterfully done, too. Some of the art I’ve seen today is just… wow. And it makes me wonder if some of these artists are actualy concept artists for game devs, or have similar jobs. If they don’t, they should! I mean, my goodness.

[Manifesto] Equal representation in games.

I recently wrote an opinion post about how I felt it would behoove games developers to actually branch out a little and try to make more demographics a little more comfortable with their field of entertainment. And at the same time open regular gamers up to new perspectives and ways of thinking. Not only this, but simply equal representation within games would be a good thing.

As such, I wrote up a manifesto of guidelines for games developers to keep in mind. I think that these points are important, personally.

The primary points of the manifesto:

If relationships are present, provide relationship options for all real world sexual orientations.

If armour is present, as many modest options as sexy ones, and equal amounts across all genders. And don’t force people into wearing certain armours.

The choice to make a character which is visibly disfigured.

The choice to make a character with a modest build (lanky/flat chested).

The choice to make a character who is overweight.

Further elements that I would also recommend:

Try not to show modest/overweight/disfigured/LGBT characters generally in a negative light compared to others. That’s not going to do a lot of good for a large subset of your audience and their confidence.

Don’t portray modest/overweight/disfigured/LGBT as being ‘different people’ than other people, don’t put a barrier there. Don’t make them stand out as something different. Don’t feed the dissonance.

Consider tackling grown-up topics in your game, such as perhaps even making your lead character trans, or disabled, or similar - thus not only giving persons in those situations a positive role model, but giving others a point of sympathy for what they have to deal with.

If you do decide to discriminate, don’t invent cockamamie excuses for people to have to pick apart. Just have the guts to actually admit that this is something you’ve chosen to do with your game.

I think that if games developers would keep this in mind, we’d actually see more of an equal show of characters in games. Less ‘perfect people’ and more normal, real people feeling comfortable with the games they play.

Every now and then something pops up where I’ll feel the need to rant about it here, and so I do. This is one of those times.

Anyone with a decent head on their shoulders will recognise that large parts of mainstream culture tend to be total BS. It’s always been that way. I’m not sure whether it’s human nature in some cases to create social dissonance, but the desperation for targets to relegate to subhuman status is growing.

Originally it was painfully obvious to see, as you had things like racism to use to point out the flaws. There was a time when you were wrong merely because of your ethnicity, and thus not entitled to the same representation as other people. Aside from being helpful as labour, most of the middle or upper classes would have preferred to forget that other ethnicities even existed.

It became uncool to be racist, as it should be. So then we moved onto the hatred of sexual orientation. If you weren’t straight, you were wrong. In fact, you were so very wrong that it gave the person recognising your wrongness the right to leave you bruised and tormented. That was normal, for a time, until eventually we figured out that that was pretty uncool, too. And as such even gay people have been creeping into entertainment. Here and there.

But it’s rare.

And these days, our cultural BS tends to surround the notion of a perfect person, that everyone has to be a supermodel, a beefcake, or a lady with an hourglass figure. In my particular favoured medium, gaming, it’s common. It’s as common as gay people either not being recognised at all, or only being included in a backhanded way. Mass Effect 3 was a rare thing for actually having a tastefully written gay character.

Anyway, back to the supermodel thing. It’s not okay to be somewhat overweight, that’s wrong. Genetics? Some people are designed biologically to have more weight than others. That doesn’t matter, everyone must be a supermodel! But it’s worse than that, because if you’re a woman, along with being a supermodel you must also be sexy. And that’s a curse.

It’s fine if you want to be sexy, but not everyone does. Not everyone wants their character to look like a hooker/stripper in a chainmail bikini. Amazing, isn’t it? It’s amazing that some people might actually want to look sexy, whilst others might not. And why is that not a choice? Where is the representation for those who don’t want to look sexy?

Where are our overweight characters? Where are the modest builds, flat-chested women, and full suits of armour? Some want that. Why isn’t it there? Some gamers might oft wonder why it appears in general that gaming is a “boy’s hobby,” and that’s because we create it to be that way. Men have much more in the way of representation than women. It’s not perfect for men, either, I’ll admit this, we lack our fat characters. But it’s easier to create an disfigured man than it is a woman, plus, men tend to get modest clothing and armour.

So where is the equal representation? Why is it that things that count for a man don’t count for a woman? Even in the game this blog is related to, Guild Wars 2, for the norns and the humans you have a much greater variety of customisation for men than you do for women. You can have a somewhat disfigured bloke in very modest clothing, but to have an disfigured woman in modest clothing? That’s almost impossible, if not actually impossible.

The only way we’ll actually change cultural BS is by actually having equal representation in games, and for pushing for it, and fighting for it. This is something that you should give a crap about. If we ever want gaming to be a grown-up medium, it has to deal with this. We need gay characters if there are relationships, we need playable overweight people, we could deal with disabled people in games too, even, and we need options for disfigured characters for both genders, and modest clothing for both genders.

Now, this isn’t some crazy rant to remove the sexiness from games. It’s not that at all. I’m sure that there are one or two people out there who’d absolutely love to misconstrue this as such, and in fact, often when I’ve brought this up the kneejerk response people make is “YOU WANT TO REMOVE SEXINESS FROM GAMES?” and then run with that in a very desperate way, hoping their straw-man will cover up their fear of, gasp, games which have equal representation.

So reblog this, if you like. Consider it a manifesto. Without removing anything, games should add:

And that should be a manifesto. These are things we should begin to expect if we ever want to get any kind of cultural evolution going. And we do need a big old paradigm shift in this area, because people who don’t fit this ‘perfect person’ standard are made to feel uncomfortable or out of place because they’re not. And they’re made to feel as they should be, classical conditioning in culture helps encourage them to be ‘perfect,’ and relevantly, in our games we only provide people with these ‘perfect’ options.

If things are to change, they do need to change with people providing entertainment. And if they did, it would help to change the opinions of those who play those games, it would open their minds and introduce them to new perspectives. Just consider - a mainstream game with a trans character, tactfully and tastefully written. Imagine the good that just that alone could do.

These are times as troubled as any, and there are still targets, still people being portrayed as less than human. It’s not ethnicities now, but sexual orientations (especially more fringe ones) are still having trouble, as are disabled people, overweight people, disfigured people, and so on. Sexism is still happening, misogyny, general misanthropy toward women - many gamers I’ve talked to suffer wtih this. This is all still happening. Discrimination is still a thing. A problem, and a big one.

This is an amusing concept. Ah charr innovation, the printing press and so many other neat things, and now pioneering photography.

The funny thing is is that I could see the Ash Legion doing this. It would be invaluable for them to be able to photograph documents rather than steal them, and they could take pictures of a compound to see if they’d catch anything that their naked eye wouldn’t. This would be a very pragmatic and functional Ash Legion tool.

Ten gold says they’re already prototyping the technology, or possibly even using it. And of course, there are charr that like shenanigans. Like Reeva, Dinky, and Maverick. So I could see this happening.

Oh, now this is utterly adorable. I’m not sure why they have glowing eyes, but I won’t object, I like them. One thing is a bit off, though - they’re both using the ear configuration found on charr women, and I’m fairly sure it’s a woman and a man in that shot.

With the men, the ears are tucked below the horns, with the women there’s a horn separating the ears.

Anyway, that doesn’t bar my enjoyment of a really awesome piece that just makes me d’awww because it’s so perfect. And look at that pipe, too! How could you not like this?

Request #4, Deva the DAPPER CHARR. Dapper as fuck.

She’s adorable, and the pose I doodled seemed perfect for WeirdFolio’s request, having to do with an old picture Xyx drew of some charr headshots where it looked like there was something going on between Charm and Deva.

He wanted a picture of Ferros “flattering” Deva. I’m not sure if he exactly meant flattering, but that’s how his translation came out.

Dapper as fuck is a good thing to be, of the range of ‘as fuck’ things that one could be. And as always, boka, your expressions are top-notch! Keep up the good work!
